Sugar Plum Fairy Makeup Magic: My Secret to Stage-Ready, Eye-Catching Nutcracker Look

Writer's picture: Veronica KVeronica K

When it comes to transforming into the iconic Sugar Plum Fairy for a performance, every detail of your stage makeup must be perfect. One of the greatest challenges I faced in my years of performing was making my eye makeup pop under the harsh stage lights.

No matter how many layers of eyeshadow I applied, the colors never seemed to deliver the rich, dramatic look I craved—they always looked too muted and flat. However, I discovered a game changing technique from my mentor, Suzanne Patterson, a 3x Emmy Award®-winning makeup artist.

The Secret Trick to Vibrant Eye Makeup

Suzanne taught me a method that revolutionized my eyeshadow application: using a lighter eyeshadow base wet. I know, it sounds so simple, but trust me—it makes all the difference. I used Graftobian White Whip eyeshadow with a touch of water, creating a paintable base that makes colors truly come to life. This trick was eye-opening (pun intended)!

Suddenly, the pigments I'd layered on so many times before burst into brilliant color, adding depth and dimension. Then I thought about this: When I'm coloring with my kids on beige construction paper, the colors appear dull and lifeless. But on bright white copier paper? They pop with intensity.

The same logic applies to eyeshadow on the skin. Adding this simple wet bright white base brings out every hue and makes the eyes stand out with dimension and character.

Why Adding More Black Isn't the Answer...

It's surprising to me how many directors and choreographers tell dancers to pile on more black eyeshadow or eyeliner to make the eyes stand out larger on stage. The reality is, that kind of look makes the eyes appear sunken or void of personality.

Vibrant colors give your eyes dimension, character, and life, whereas excessive black can overshadow your artistic look. Unless of course, your character is a racoon.

This technique became the turning point in creating my signature Sugar Plum Fairy look and can do the same for your Nutcracker performance, dance competition, or ballet recital. It’s a simple, yet powerful way to create bold, eye-catching makeup that enhances your performance.

Why I Wear Graftobian and Natural Born Cosmetics over Drug Store Makeup

If you're wondering why I use Graftobian and Natural Born Cosmetics, the answer is simple: my skin demands it. With sensitive, highly reactive skin and numerous allergies, I need products that are gentle, clean, and safe. Graftobian delivers in every way, offering a wide range of matte and shimmer eyeshadows that are unmatched in pigmentation when applied correctly.

These products are my go-to for stage makeup, photoshoots, and videos because no other brand holds a candle to their vibrancy, staying power, and long wear, especially on stage.

Equally important to my makeup routine is Natural Born Cosmetics, an exclusive line developed for celebrities by makeup artist, Suzanne Patterson. I’m proud to offer these exceptional makeup that holds up to the rigors of stage performance while being safe for even the most sensitive skin types. It is perfect for dancers and performers who want to look stunning without compromising skin health. (Spoiler Alert: Get excited because come 2025 I'm going to be talking about all the skincare products I use to keep my skin healthy!)
